What Is BWSSB?

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board is an autonomous body formed by the State legislature under the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board Act on 10/09/1964 for water supply and sewerage disposal. It is one of the first water supply and sanitation utilities in India with the jurisdiction of the entire Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Area of 800 sq km, (Bengaluru Core area of 245 sq km, 8 Urban Local Bodies of 330 sq km, 7 City Municipal Corporation and 1 Town Municipal Corporation and 110 Villages of 225 sq km).

It has the following mandates:

  • Adequate water supply to meet demand.

  • Creation of sewerage network & safe disposal of sewage.

  • Preparation, and implementation of plans & schemes for augmenting water supply & safe disposal of sewage.

  • Tax and collection of water charges on a “no loss no profit basis” for the sustainability of the system.

Offline Process:

  1. Visit your nearest BWSSB Sub-Division Office

  2. Collect the new water connection form

  4. After completion submit the form to the concerned officer along with a processing fee

  5. After receiving the completed form the officer will verify the documents and will issue an acknowledgement

Online Process:

  1. Goto the BWSSB portal and register yourself

  2. Log in and click on Apply for new water connection

  3. Fill in the online form, upload scanned copies(clear and accurate) of all required documents

  4. Pay the processing fee online through net banking, debit/credit card, or by UPI

  5. After applying, you’ll receive an acknowledgement number for tracking purposes.

Connection Charges and Payment Structure

The fees depend on the connection size, build-up area, and whether you’re applying for a domestic or commercial connection. For domestic connections, the fee is broken into categories:

  • Processing Fee: Rs. 100

  • Infrastructure Charges: Rs. 100 per square meter of the build-up area

  • Water Meter Fee: It starts from Rs. 2000 depending on the size(usually 15mm for individual residences).

  • Security Deposit: For domestic connection, it is Rs. 1000.

Inspection and Approval of the Site

After applying, the BWSSB will arrange an on-site visit within 10-15 working days. During this inspection, the officials will verify the property's legality, plumbing layout, and existing water infrastructure.

Once the inspection is completed, if the property is under all BWSSB’s regulations they will approve for new water connection but sometimes they may ask for additional details or if rectifications are needed.

Final Payment and Connection Installation

If your application and inspection are cleared without any further issues, you’ll receive a notification with the final amount payable as an Infrastructure fee and Connection fee. Upon payment of the final amount, BWSSB will schedule the water meter installation at your property. They will install a standard 15mm to 20mm meter depending on your property's requirements.

Water Supply Timings and Activation

After the installation of the water meter, the connection is activated and you’ll receive water as per BWSSB’s supply schedule. In most of the residential areas, BWSSB supplies water at designated times. Stay informed about your area’s water supply timings through the local BWSSB office.

Tariffs, Billing & Payment

Water Tariff

The water tariff in Bangalore is based on the amount of water used:

    • Up to 8,000 litres: Rs 7 per litre i.e. Rs. 56,000

    • 8,001 to 25,000 litres: Rs 11 per litre i.e. Rs. 88,011 to Rs. 2,75,000

    • 25,001 to 50,000 litres: Rs 25 per litre i.e. Rs. 6,25,025 to Rs. 12,50,000

    • 50,001 litres and above Rs 45 per litre i.e. Rs. 22,50,045

Sanitary charge

The minimum sanitary charge is Rs 100 or 25% of the water bill, whichever is higher. For water usage up to 8,000 litres, the sanitary fee is Rs 14 per connection.

Prorata charges

Prorata fees are charged at Rs 250, Rs 400, or Rs 600 per square meter for new houses.

Other charges

Other charges on a BWSSB bill include sewerage, maintenance, service, meter rent, inspection, and penalty charges.

Payment

You can pay your BWSSB water bill online or through payment apps like Paytm, Freecharge, GPay, and PhonePe. To use the apps, you need to log in and provide your RR(Revenue Register) number and any other required information.

Additional Regulations and Responsibilities

  1. Rainwater harvesting compliance: For plots measuring over 2,400 sq ft, RWH is mandatory.

  2. Borewell Registration: If your property uses borewell water, you must obtain an NOC from BWSSB and register the borewell.

  3. Sewage Connection: BWSSB requires properties to have a proper functional sewage connection.
