The Foundation & Evolution of Bangalore

Bengaluru was founded by Kempe Gowda during the 16th century, the rule of the Vijayanagara Empire. In 1537, the mud fort was built along with market areas called "pete" such as Chickpete, Balepete, and Cottonpete which were grown beyond the confines of time, and even today stand tall as timeless commercial hubs in the country.

Under the Colonial reign, this part was taken over by the British from the Mysore kingdom which was under Tipu Sultan in 1799.

The British built the Bangalore Cantonment in in 1809, making it an army stronghold in South India.

This also led to the rapid modernization of the city, and the construction of various iconic landmarks such as Cubbon Park, Bangalore Palace, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) and various other heritage buildings and army bases in the city.

Post Independence era saw the rise of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and thus saw Bangalore's immense presence in the country as a hub of education and science. In fact, legendary scientists such as CV Raman, Homi J Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai, later two spearheaded in the development of Space and Nuclear technology in the country all were prominent parts of IISc.

During its early stages in the post-Independence era, Bangalore was not only known as the capital of Karnataka but also as the garden city of India owing to the greenery and the pleasant climate. The modernity of the city, alongside the pleasant climate which it is famed for also attracted many urban dwellers and pensioners, especially from the army, thereby earning the moniker Pensioners Paradise.

However, during the economic liberalization of the early 90s it became a hub of commerce. This brought the attention of world renowned brands into the city, infact KFC's first Indian outlet was opened in Brigade Road, Bangalore CBD.There are numerous brand outlets and shopping malls in Central Bangalore or Central Business District.
