But have you ever wondered what are the benefits of Rudraksha Mala? Let's find out together

What is Rudraksha mala?

The seed of the Rudraksha Tree (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) is called a Rudraksha.

"Rudra" is the name of "Shiva" and Aksha means "Tears", thus a Rudraksha is believed to be the tear of Shiva. These seeds are known to be extremely powerful spiritually and are often worn by the Shiva Devotees (Shivaites) of Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma.

Lord Shiva or Mahadev along with Vishnu and Brahma are the Trimurthi or Trinity of gods in Hinduism and he is known to embody the "destruction" of things both finite and infinite. There are numerous temples in India devoted to lord Shiva

He embodies destruction he has both sides of being a Kshipra Kopi - where he is the Rage personified and Kshipra Prasadi - where he is known to be pleased easily by his true devotees. According to mythology he has fought with the God of Death, Yamadev and destroyed him to protect his devotee Markandeya from death itself.

Mahadev thus becomes an ultimate source of power and protection to his devotees. And Rudraksha mala is a culmination of the divine energy of the all powerful Bhagwan Shiva.

Origins of Rudraksha Mala: Why Did Shiva Cry?

According to Puranik accounts, Lord Shiva was married to Sati Devi daughter of Daksha Prajapati. However, Daksha was not so fond of the union between Shiva & Sati. Thus to insult Mahadev Shiva, he conducted a great Yajna and invited every god and celestial being except Mahadev. When Sati Devi enquired, he stated in front of every guest there that Shiva is unclean due to his hatred of him. Sati Devi was deeply hurt by this incident and immolated herself by jumping on the Yajna pyre.

Shiva was enraged. He crushed a strand from his long hair with his foot. Out of this crush spawned two terrible deities Virabhdra and Bhadrakali. Mahadev ordered them to slay Daksha and destroy the yagna. Mahadev, filled with sorrow, carried Devi's burnt body and danced the powerful Rudrathandava out of grief and anger. This dance could have destroyed the universe, but Maha Vishnu intervened, slicing it into 51 pieces with his Sudarshana chakra. These pieces fell across the Indian Subcontinent, known as Akhand Bharath. Parts of Sati Devi are called the Shaktipeetha.

After his beloved's death, Shiva was distraught and calmed himself by meditating for many long years. Once he finished his meditation and opened his eyes, a drop of tear fell on earth which turned into the first Rudrakhsa Tree. Likewise, the Rudraksha fruits that house the seeds are blue in colour.

Millions of devotees wear the mala consisting of a collection of Rudraksha seeds to invoke the protection and love of Shiva which is one of the main benefits of Rudraksha mala.
