The Bharatmala Pariyojana project was established on July 31, 2015, by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The roadway project will include bypasses, ring roads, flyovers, elevated corridors, overpasses, tunnels, underpasses, etc in its ecosystem. The Bharatmala will also raise the existing economic corridors from 6 to 50.

According to the central ministry, a total of 83,677 km or 51,994 miles will be covered and provide traffic jam-free and shortest optimized smooth travel for logistical easiness. It will connect the remote areas, satellite cities, and metropolises of the nation under one roadway nexus or network that offers complete connectivity or ease of access.

Initially, the project was set to cover metro cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, etc, and then move on to the secondary cities and satellite townships nearby. Then the project was to create highways from the states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana, and move towards the northern Himalayan ranges and states such as Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.

The North East Corridor connects the 7 waterway terminals on the Brahmaputra River and 7 State Capitals. Bharatmala Pariyojana also extends to many rural and remote regions, including the border areas like Terai. More prominence will be given to tribal, backward, and far-flung areas as well. The major ports and sea routes will be added to the Sagar Mala and the Mountain range corridors and road nexuses will be added to the Parvatmala scheme.

Despite the extension, the project isn't halting. As of November 2023, roughly 42% (or 15,045 km) of the Phase-I network had been constructed. This signifies tremendous progress in building a more connected and efficient national highway system.

Additionally, complications in land acquisition procedures caused delays. Finally, the expenses of building high-speed corridors, a critical component of the project, proved to be greater than expected. Despite the delayed deadline, Phase I of the Bharatmala Pariyojana is making significant progress. As of December 2023, construction had begun on nearly 76% of the planned roadway length (around 26,418 kilometers). This means that a large section of the project will move forward with contractors on board. Even more refreshing is the fact that more than 42% (about 15,549 kilometers) of these awarded highways are currently complete. This shows a smooth execution procedure alongside contract granting, opening the door for a better integrated and efficient road network across India.

Official data shows a total expenditure of Rs. 4.10 lakh crore, which exceeds the earlier projection of Rs. 5.35 lakh crore. This significant cost escalation necessitates the exploration of new funding options to fill the gap. Furthermore, stricter cost management measures are required to ensure project completion within the updated budget. Without appropriate solutions to manage the cost overrun, the Bharatmala Pariyojana's timely execution and overall viability could be at risk.

Overall, the Bharatmala Pariyojana promises to significantly improve India's roadway system. While recent updates acknowledge both success and challenges, the project is likely to continue altering India's road network in the years ahead.
