India's First Hydrogen Train to Debut in December 2024

21, January 2026

A proud moment for all Indian

Our nation is set to get its first hydrogen-fueled train by the end of this year!

As part of the National Hydrogen Mission, India will become the fifth country to adopt hydrogen-fueled trains, following Germany, France, Sweden, and China.

Alongside the Vande Bharat fleet, this move will revolutionize our transport sector. Indian Railways plans to launch 35 hydrogen trains, with an estimated cost of ₹80 crore per train and ₹70 crore for infrastructure, particularly across hilly terrains and other cultural landscapes.

The railway ministry will implement a pilot program where hydrogen cells will be retrofitted into current Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure. The first trial run is set for December 2024, in the Northern Railway Division, specifically on the Jind-Sonipat section of Haryana.

Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member (Infrastructure) of the Railway Board at the Ministry of Railways, stated that the railways plan to launch 50 hydrogen trains in India by 2047.

The major heritage routes identified for hydrogen trains include:

  • Matheran Hill Railway

  • Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

  • Kalka-Shimla Railway

  • Kangra Valley Railway

  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway

According to officials, the prototype train for the Jind-Sonipat section will be assembled at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. A 1-megawatt Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) electrolyser, located in Jind, will provide hydrogen for the train. GreenH Electrolysis has announced that the electrolyser will operate continuously, producing around 430 kg of hydrogen per day.

Additionally, the refueling facility in Jind will be equipped with a 3,000-kg hydrogen storage system, a hydrogen compressor, and two hydrogen dispensers featuring pre-cooler integration, ensuring efficient and rapid refueling for the trains.

In conclusion, this initiative will help the nation expand its green and sustainable portfolio while transforming the transport sector.
