South Bengaluru Poised for a Second International Airport

30, January 2026

Bengaluru is on the brink of a major transformation in its aviation infrastructure, as discussions intensify regarding the establishment of a second international airport in South Bengaluru. With a focus on enhancing connectivity and supporting air travel expansion, this ambitious project aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Bengaluru International Airport while fostering economic growth in the region.

Possible Locations for the New Airport

During an important conference at the Vidhana Soudha, officials considered at least six possible locations for the second airport, with Somanahalli village emerging as a strong contender. This location is ideally placed 70 km from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), making it an excellent choice to minimize operational overlap and maximize transportation infrastructure efficiency.

The Infrastructure Development Department (IDD) has identified several suitable locations, including Dobbspet, Nelamangala, Bidadi, and Harohalli. However, Patil, the Minister for Infrastructure Development, stated that no final decision has been made and political interests will not influence the outcome.

Next week's conference is expected to finalize the location.

Impact on Tourism and Local Development

One of the proposed attractions is a 250-meter-tall skydeck in Hemmigepura that aims to boost tourism. However, if the airport is built in southern Bengaluru, this skydeck may face challenges due to probable interference with aircraft movements.

The main objective is to build an airport that fulfils international standards and provides modern amenities spanning approximately 5,000 acres of land.

The new international airport is expected to drive economic growth by helping local businesses and attracting investments. By enhancing connectivity, domestic and international passengers could move more smoothly, making Bengaluru an even more enticing destination for both tourists and investors.

A Vision for Connectivity: The Next Steps in Airport Planning

As the state government continues to assess the ideal location for the second airport, stakeholders are keenly monitoring how this plan progresses. Once the appropriate location has been determined, the Ministry of Civil Aviation will conduct a detailed study to ensure that all parameters are carefully reviewed before finalization.

The construction of the second international airport in South Bengaluru is a big step forward for Karnataka airports, integrating with the state's overall aspirations for infrastructure development and connectivity expansion.

By investing in robust transportation infrastructure, the government hopes to pave the way for long-term growth in the aviation sector and strengthen Bengaluru's position as a vital participant in the global travel industry.

Conclusion

The anticipated second international airport in South Bengaluru is not just about expanding air travel capacity; it’s a strategic initiative that promises to enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and position Bengaluru as a pivotal hub in India’s aviation landscape. As discussions progress and a decision looms, the potential benefits for the region remain significant, paving the way for a new chapter in Bengaluru's development.
